My New Year’s Resolution
Happy New Year to all my readers!
It’s that time again, where we get drunk on the possibilities of the next 365 days and make a list of all the great feats that we will perform this year, like becoming a body builder or figuring out how to cancel the subscriptions to all those magazines you get but don’t read.
Well, I’m just going to make one resolution: I’m going to learn to play the guitar. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and an off-the-cuff remark to my mother-in-law resulted in James wrapping up a shiny new 6-stringer to put under the tree (I’d like to point out that it’s the only gift I received that was actually for me this Christmas, something I think I’d best get used to – not that I’m not grateful for my new travel cot, stroller, and baby-sized bikini).
I’ve tried to learn the guitar in the past, but I’m the kind of gal that needs instruction and I’ve never had that before. Thankfully, my mother-in-law just happens to teach guitar, so I’m already plucking out “Ode to Joy” on the E and B strings and I can go from a C-chord to a G-chord (with about a 5 minute lag in between as I place my fingers in the right places). But that’s all I need to perform a mean version of “The Wheels on the Bus”.
The reason I want to learn guitar is because of Baby. I took her to a music class called Tin Pan Annie and, from the moment we sat down, she was riveted. While the other kids crawled around and ignored the teacher, Baby sat still and stared at her with such joy on her face that I decided I should make the effort to learn.
So this year, I’m going to transform myself into Frauline Maria, complete with clothes made from curtains. And I want to be playing at least 5 songs from The Sound of Music by next December. That’s my goal anyway.
And I’m going to post some video blogs, so you can see how I’m getting on. Wish me luck!
